The student had this to say about Dr. Crotts:

I had an excellent experience during my ID rotation at UF Health Spanish Plaines with Ann, and I strongly believe she deserves recognition for her dedication to teaching and student development. She consistently creates a supportive and engaging learning environment, demonstrating both deep expertise in infectious diseases and a genuine passion for education. Ann is very approachable and patient, and she meets each student at their individual level while still encouraging growth. Her enthusiasm for infectious diseases is evident in every interaction and made the rotation both engaging and rewarding. Even for students who may not initially be interested in ID, I believe Ann has a unique ability to spark curiosity and build confidence in the subject.

Brief bio or Site description

I am a Board-Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP) and Infectious Disease Clinical Specialist with more than 15 years of experience. I work at a UF Health Spanish Plaines hospital located in the heart of The Villages, where I provide specialized infectious diseases services and precept APPE students and pharmacy residents during Infectious Diseases I and II rotations. I am passionate about all aspects of infectious diseases, with interests in the management of Clostridioides difficile infections, the use of fecal microbiota transplantation for prevention of recurrent C. difficile infection, infections in older adults, and antimicrobial resistance among Gram-negative pathogens.

What is your or your sites philosophy on educating students and/or providing pharmacy services?
I am passionate about mentoring students and helping them discover that infectious diseases can be both approachable and exciting. Because many students begin their rotation feeling intimidated by the complexity of infectious diseases, I work hard to create a welcoming environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, making clinical recommendations, and growing their confidence. I believe the best way to learn infectious diseases is through caring for real patients, and I enjoy providing students with exposure to a diverse range of infections while supporting their development every step of the way. My goal is for students to leave the rotation with a respect for the complexity of infectious diseases, but also with the knowledge and skills to thoughtfully approach these challenges in their future practice.

What is a fun fact about you or the site?
I was the very first APPE student at my site, so it has been especially rewarding to come full circle and now serve as a preceptor for future generations of pharmacy students. When I’m not working with bugs and drugs, you can usually find me out on the water fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
