Carlie Dobertien

The student had this to say about Dr. Dobbertien:

Dr. Dobbertien has been an exceptional preceptor, offering unwavering guidance and wisdom throughout my rotations. Her deep expertise in pharmacy and commitment to patient-centered care helped me truly grasp the vital role pharmacists play in the community setting. Through her example, I learned the importance of empathy, kindness, and genuine connection with patients—qualities that directly influence patient outcomes and elevate the standard of care. Dr. Dobbertien didn’t just teach clinical skills; she modeled what it means to be a compassionate healthcare professional.

Dr. Dobbertien made this experience a truly rewarding APPE rotation as this rotation allowed me to critically think and understand the importance of patient-centered care. As this was my first experience in community pharmacy, the staff and my preceptor answered any questions that I had and allowed this a truly teaching moment experience.

Brief bio or Site description

The outpatient pharmacy is located right across the street from the main entrance to the hospital which sets us up perfectly to be able to cater to the patients who are discharging. We work with the providers and nurses to tackle issues on prescriptions before the patient leaves the hospital, provide education on drug therapy, and find solutions to medication barriers. We are a fully functioning retail pharmacy working to expand the pharmacist’s role in the community- test to treat and diabetes education services will be offered soon!

What is your or your sites philosophy on educating students and/or providing pharmacy services?
Educating future pharmacists is near and dear to us, as I and my partner pharmacist have both graduated from the UF College of Pharmacy within the last five years and we understand the important influence a preceptor has on shaping students. While you cannot possibly show a student all the various scenarios they may encounter, it is vital to pass on clinical pearls and teach how to work through different concepts and scenarios. We try to incorporate the students in every aspect of the pharmacy practice within our site to help them leave at the end of their rotation with a full understanding of the operation and role of the pharmacist at the outpatient pharmacy, while also developing their clinical knowledge.

What is a fun fact about you or the site?
The outpatient pharmacy is the best of both worlds- a mix of inpatient and retail pharmacy practice!
