Chase Brown, PharmD, BCPS
The student had this to say about Dr. Brown:
“My preceptor and the many different professionals at my site. Chase was a fantastic preceptor. He was able to challenge me every day with this rotation on a very unique rotation. We rounded every day from 8:30-1:30 PM and I was exposed to around 40-50 patient cases daily. He was able to break down this very tough subject into small parts so I could slowly build up my knowledge base. We had topic discussions most days after rounds where he took the time to truly make sure I understood the material discussed on rounds at higher than a surface level. I also appreciate his willingness to provide me feedback regularly. This feedback allowed me to grow a lot throughout these past 6 weeks. I felt I was truly able to grow from this feedback and become a stronger future pharmacist. This rotation did come with a tough learning curve in the beginning, but my preceptor really tried to encourage me to learn and understand the material with readings and a lot of topic discussions up front. By the end of the rotation, I felt comfortable in making key interventions to patients on rounds. I am very grateful for this experience, and I appreciate the willingness of Chase to take the time to explain these concepts at a deeper level with me.e were very welcoming and enthusiastic in working with students. They gave us many opportunities for us to learn and to apply our clinical knowledge.”

What is your or your sites philosophy on educating students and/or providing pharmacy services?
I believe that being a high-level acute care pharmacist is all about being able to assess clinical decisions from a risk versus benefit analysis for each unique patient. It starts with a strong understanding of pathophysiology, which is then tied to guidelines and evidence-based medicine. From there, you can make individualized recommendations, decide when to deviate (or not) from guidelines, and anticipate potential interventions. Our hepatology population provides a really great opportunity to dig in on the pathophysiology of cirrhosis and how we manage these complex patients in varying clinical situations.
