Hayden Johnson

The preceptor had this to say about Hayden:

HIPPE – UF Health St. Johns by Dr. Joseph Crane

Hayden was asked on ICU rounds by Critical Care Director and MD on how to diagnose cholangitis on the spot and knew several of the diagnostic criteria on the spot during rounds which was impressive for student. The MD asked him to follow up and talk to him if patient did have disease later. Hayden further looked into the patients chart and then had a private talk with MD and myself present where he listed all criteria for diagnosis and MD ask if patient had disease, Hayden responded NO MD shook his hand saying I agree with a big smile. For an HIPPE student to be comfortable to talk to a Director of Critical Care Medical Doctor confidently about diagnositics is above and beyond what I would expect out of a first time rotation in a hospital student pharmacist.

What was your favorite part of this rotation?

My favorite part of this rotation was having a proactive and educational preceptor. Dr. Crane was constantly giving us insight into his job as a critical care pharmacist while also exposing us to the other pharmacy career opportunities in the hospital setting. I can confidently say I learned something new everyday on this rotation.

What advice do you have for pharmacy students preparing for rotations?

I would advise students preparing for rotations to start with an open mind. There is no telling what knowledge you will gain or doors might open for you.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan to work at a pharmacy in my rural community to hopefully improve the quality of care and healthcare access to a multitude of underserved patients.

What is a fun fact about you?

My senior year of high school, I won high individual in Florida’s Future Farmers of America state forestry competition and was even offered a scholarship to study forestry at UF. However, I had already had my heart set on pharmacy.
