“Dr. Breslin’s passion for evidence-based therapy is evident in his teaching of antimicrobial stewardship. He doesn’t just talk at you. He has the student read the guidelines and come to him with the answer. The set up of the rotation was geared towards not just reading material, but studying the material to really understand it. He starts the rotation reviewing the basics, and builds on it each week, so that there is repetition. This works to ensure the student understands the ‘why’ behind how we choose medications based on pathogens. I can’t say enough about this rotation. It was challenging, but so worth it!”
Brief bio or Site description
Viera Hospital is a small, 84-bed, community hospital. We have a 20-bed ICU, where I attend daily multidiscipllinary rounds with the intensivist.
What is your or your sites philosophy on educating students and/or providing pharmacy services?
My student and resident rotations have a strong emphasis on evidence-based medicine. We focus on the most recent disease state guidelines and the primary literature that determines the guideline recommendations. My goal by the end of a rotation is to encourage the student to independently research the available literature to accurately assess their patients’ pharmaceutical therapy.
What is a fun fact about you or the site?
We just opened a brand-new labor and delivery unit last month. It has been challenging but exciting to familiarize ourselves with an entirely new patient population.
