Daytona Beach VA Clinic
Joel Peterson, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES
The student had this to say about Dr. Nieves:
“Dr. Peterson was an extraordinary preceptor. He exemplified extensive knowledge in ambulatory care medication management and made patient care his top priority. He fostered a positive learning environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussion. This rotation boosted both my confidence in my decision making as well as critical thinking. He provided rolling feedback that allowed me to refine my skills and build on my learning. His reputation among other VA staff was that of approachability and expertise. He remains a valuable asset to students, his team, and the patients he serves.”
Brief bio or Site description
We provide ambulatory care services by working with four primary care providers and seeing on average ~10-12 patients/day. We have a full scope of practice to adjust medications and order labs autonomously.
What is your or your sites philosophy on educating students and/or providing pharmacy services?
Every student learns differently and at different speeds. I believe in building students confidence in what they’ve learned and helping them to apply this knowledge to the real world environment. Positive feedback and constructive criticism are a big part of that. My goal with each student is to push them to learn as much as possible while they’re with me, focusing on improving their weaknesses while building up their confidence in their strengths at the same time.
What is a fun fact about you or the site?
Our clinic is brand new, completed in 5/2024, and state of the art in many ways. A little about me, I’m a past graduate from UF Orlando campus in 2013 and I love all things Gators as well as hunting and fishing whenever I can.
