The preceptor had this to say about Karen:

Cleveland Clinic Martin Tradition Hospital

Karen Portillo is one of the most outstanding IPPE students I have had the pleasure of mentoring. She demonstrated exceptional intellectual curiosity, initiative, and professionalism throughout her rotation. Karen was highly self-directed, eager to learn, and consistently approached new experiences with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Her clear academic and personal goals, combined with her strong work ethic and commitment to growth, allowed her to fully engage in every learning opportunity. She exemplifies the qualities of a future pharmacy leader and is highly deserving of this recognition.

What was your favorite part of this rotation?

My favorite part of this rotation was the opportunity to experience so many different areas of hospital pharmacy. I enjoyed rounding with pharmacists from various specialties, learning from nurses, and observing procedures in the cath lab. The highlight of my rotation was spending time with the pediatric/NICU pharmacist, as pediatric pharmacy is an area I hope to pursue in the future. Seeing their role on the healthcare team further strengthened my interest in working with pediatric patients.

What advice do you have for pharmacy students preparing for rotations?

Approach each rotation with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Keep an open mind, be respectful, and embrace every opportunity your preceptor provides. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and remember that it’s okay not to know everything. Take the initiative to research unfamiliar topics and follow up with your preceptor to discuss what you learned. Additionally, communicate your personal goals early so your preceptor can help create meaningful learning experiences that align with your interests.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a PGY1 residency at a children’s hospital to further develop my clinical skills and continue working toward a career in pediatric pharmacy.

What is a fun fact about you?

One of my favorite summer activities is waking up early to go swimming at sunrise. I enjoy starting the day outdoors.
