Tanner Beachy

The preceptor had this to say about Tanner:

 Humana, Inc.

Tanner prepared the Zymfentra clinical drug review, which he presented at our external quarterly Pharmacy & Therapeutics meeting. Multiple AVPs and Directors reached out to me directly to compliment him on his professionalism, delivery, and content (especially considering this was his first APPE rotation). Tanner went above and beyond by completing two additional optional projects during his six-week rotation.

What was your favorite part of this rotation?

The APPE experience at Humana has been the most impactful experience of my young career; it would be such a tall task to narrow it down to a single ‘favorite part.’

I thoroughly enjoyed the plethora of opportunities to deepen clinical knowledge, apply managed care principles to pharmacy practices, and learn more about the many roles of a pharmacist within managed care. One major highlight was conducting a full clinical review with the Clinical Drug Evaluation & Policy Strategy team, including presenting at the Quarterly Pharmacy & Therapeutics Meeting to internal & external stakeholders. Another great opportunity was assessing the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on diabetes adherence & medication utilization via Medicare claims data analysis and presenting findings to the Patient Safety team.

I’d also like to highlight the professional growth experienced. There were multiple formal presentation opportunities with tangible feedback given after each, allowing me to grow as a presenter. There is no higher endorsement I could give to this APPE experience!

What advice do you have for pharmacy students preparing for rotations?

While preparing for rotations, I highly recommend being incredibly diligent & conducting thorough research when ranking block & individual rotations. The University of Florida Office of Experiential Programs does a phenomenal job of providing so many & such a variety of different experiences for their students (300+ blocks when ranking in 2023). Investing time and being strategic about ranking programs that align with your career interests allows one to make the most of their APPE year!

Whilst on rotations, a great piece of advice I received from my career coach, Dr. Teresa Roane, was to “treat each day like a job interview.” Approaching each day with this mindset allows one to present themselves in the highest possible manner and make the most of each experience. You never know what may come of each opportunity!

What are your plans after graduation?

After having two incredible managed care APPE rotations (Humana & Health First Health Plans); I hope to continue building upon a stout foundation via applying for PGY-1 residencies in the managed care space.

What is a fun fact about you?

My Little League baseball team from Dhahran, Saudi Arabia represented the Middle East & Africa region in the 2010 & 2011 Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
